After bariatric surgery, you may be instructed to crush your medications for a time period.
PLEASE CONSULT WITH A PHARMACIST TO FIND OUT IF THE MEDICATIONS YOU ARE TAKING CAN BE CRUSHED. For example, pills with an enteric coating shouw not be crushed of cut. The enteric coating allows the pill to pass through the stomach and into the intestine while whole and intact. Some medications may also cause irritation to the esophagus when crushed before ingesting. (i.e. Fosamax).
Pill crushing is effective with medications in tablet form. Medications distributed in CAPSULES CANNOT BE CRUSHED. You might be able to open the capsule.
